November 30th holds a special meaning to me. It’s the dual anniversary of both the start of my business in 2009 and the move to the Dumont storefront in 2013. I think it’s pretty awesome that both occasions fall on the same date. Each of these occasions mark new beginnings for me. Very brave steps forward to take on different and somewhat difficult challenges.
I have a background in law and, while sitting in my office one day, I nervously completed the paperwork necessary to form the business. I waited to file it with the state and kept it on my hard drive. I knew, logically, that just forming a business didn’t mean that I’d have to actually work the business. It was just a paper filing, I reasoned, I didn’t need to do anything with the business. However, deep inside I knew it was going to take me somewhere, which is why I was nervous. A few days later, I asked my husband if he thought it would be a bad thing if I started the business. He said, “No, of course not, I think you should do it. But what do you want to get out of it?” I replied, “I just want to know what it’s like to make one wedding cake. I really want to do that for someone, to make something delicious for their wedding. That would be such an honor.”
Countless wedding and party cakes later, I still feel the same way. It’s an incredible honor to be hired to make a cake for any occasion. There a tremendous amount of trust that is placed in a cake maker because, after all, you can’t do much once the cake is delivered. I am of the firm belief that this kind of trust can’t be taken lightly.
The business grew quickly over the past few years and I then saw the need to take the business in a new direction. It took quite a while to find my new space – you really can’t rush these things – but the wait was well worth it. The photo below was taken on the first full day at my Dumont storefront. Notice the big smile!
The heartfelt appreciation and thanks that I have for each of you – my clients, soon-to-be-clients, vendors, social media fans/friends, family, friends – is endless. All of your support, however it’s given, keeps me going. Without each of you, this journey would not be as delicious!
